A new study had revealed the very high percentage of people living in Fuerteventura who were not born on the island.
The study, commissioned by the College of Economists and widely reported in local media today, shows that over 43,000 people, 36% of Fuerteventura’s population, were born outside Spain
Several specific parts of Fuerteventura have even higher figures, with places such as the island’s most popular resort area of La Oliva (which takes in Corralejo and El Cotillo, among other spots) recording a non-Spanish population of 48%, and only one third of its residents born in the Canaries. Closely behind La Oliva comes the municipality of Antigua, where non-Spaniards make up 47% of the total inhabitants.
The study findings make for a very interesting comparison with the situation overall in the Canaries, where the number of resident foreigners averages just over 20%, with 71% of the population were born in the islands.
