A man who got into serious difficulty while swimming at a north Tenerife beach can thank three surfers who were riding the waves nearby for their quick thinking, which rescued him from likely drowning.

The incident occurred around 7pm yesterday evening in Puerto de la Cruz and saw emergency services mobilised to assist the swimmer.

According to witnesses, the man was unable to make his way back to the shore due to conditions at the Punta Brava beach, which is well known for its unpredictable currents, and his difficulties were spotted by the trio of surfers, who rushed to his aid. A fourth person who saw the situation developing from the shore did not hesitate to take to the water to help also and between them they managed to pull the hapless swimmer to the sand, where an ambulance arrived within minutes.

After receiving initial assistance on the beach, the man was taken by ambulance to the Hospiten Bellevue hospital in Puerto de l Cruz. No details have been released as to his identity.
