Tens of thousands of music fans are expected to turn out in Las Palmas for the star attraction of the city’s Carnival, which finishes in impressive style this weekend.
The Carnival organisers have come in for some criticism over the cost of the concert in the Parque Santa Catalina district tonight but say the nearly one million euros spent on bringing superstar Maluma to Gran Canaria are well worth it.
The presence of the 31-year-old Colombian, famous for his unique combination of Latin and pop rhythms, has triggered massive interest, not to mention disruption to traffic and parking in and around the open-air venue from noon today, even though the actual concert is not scheduled to start until 8.30pm.
Maluma, who boasts over 63 million followers on Instagram, has multiple diamond and platinum albums to his name and has worked with artists of the calibre of Madonna, The Weeknd and Jennifer Lopez during a career that started at the early age of 17. His international fame prompted him to create his own fashion label, Remanence, which is proving a major hit with young people despite only being launched last October. After his headlining Carnival concert in Las Palmas, the Colombian travels to the UK to perform at the O2 next Tuesday as part his +PRETTY +DIRTY TOUR.
