Two new sniffer dogs used by police in Fuerteventura are proving a major headache for drug peddlers in the north of the island.
The pair, called Niko and Kata, have been a permanent presence in La Oliva, accompanying officers on patrol and on visits to premises where drug-related activity is suspected.
Their detection success in recent months has been such that, in the period December- February alone, police have initiated proceedings against the same number of people as in the whole of 2024.
La Oliva police say they are making an average of 33 drug-related interventions every weekend now thanks to the keen noses of the dogs and want the authorities to create a permanent canine unit in north Fuerteventura, which includes some of the island’s busiest resorts. In addition to the actual interventions, police say the presence of the dogs on patrols in and around popular night spots in the resorts, particularly Corralejo, is having a clear deterrent effect and reducing the presence of drugs on the streets.
