Basketball side La Laguna Tenerife chalked up another win in the ACB Premiership at the weekend and are on course to record their best season ever in Spain’s top flight.

Txus Vidorreta’s men comfortably defeated relegation-threatened Leyma Coruña (92-83) in the Santiago Martín Arena to notch up their 23rd league win of the season, two short of their best showing of 25 wins recorded in 2020-21.

With five games to go, the record looks firmly on but, equally importantly, the latest win virtually guarantees the Tenerife side a play-off seeding given that a top four finish is now a near certainty. The team currently lie second, just behind leaders Real Madrid, and only a collapse in form in the last month of the regular season would see them Tenerife drop out of the seeded spots.

The brilliant season continues also in Europe, with qualification for the Final Four of the Basketball Champions League (BCL), which takes place in Athens, Greece, from 9-11 May. The Canarians are hoping to become the first team to win the BCL three times, following the successes of 2017 and 2022, but first must overcome Turkish giants Galatasaray in the semifinals.

The Canaries’ other senior basketball club, Dreamland Gran Canaria, kept their play-off prospects alive with an away win over Zaragoza and continue to occupy the final berth in the top eight. The win also helped put behind the disappointment of the Eurocup final defeat by Israel’s Hapoel Shlomo Tel Aviv earlier in April.
