One of Spain’s most promising football stars faces trial in connection with the alleged filming and distribution of a sex video involving an under-age girl.

After almost two years of preliminary investigation, a judge on the island has decided that formal proceedings are to continue against Real Madrid and Spain defender Raúl Asencio, who is from Gran Canaria, and three of his former colleagues in Real Madrid’s youth team. One of the other players is currently on loan to a club in the English premiership.

The four are accused of breaching privacy without consent by filming a sex session and sending videos to third parties without the consent of the two women involved, one of them a girl aged 16 at the time.

The incident is alleged to have taken place in a private area of a beach club on the island in June 2023 and to have caused the two females post-traumatic stress, according to the court statement issued yesterday. In September 2023, the players were arrested and had their mobile phones confiscated by police.

News of the decision by the court was followed swiftly yesterday by a detailed statement released by Ascencio, who categorically denied any involvement in the recording and subsequent distribution of the images of the sex session.

In an unusual step late last night, the judge issued a further statement rectifying the original charges laid against Ascencio and exonerating him from taking part in the session and recordings. However, the popular player is still charged with breaching the women’s privacy by sharing the images and, knowing that one of the females was aged just 16, with participating in child pornography.
