Fans of jazz music have further dates with one of the genre’s iconic names in the coming days in the Canaries.
The islands’ top jazz orchestra is currently on the road with a series of concerts that pay tribute to Duke Ellington on the anniversary of the legendary musician’s birth 125 years ago.
The Atlantic Jazz Lab Orchestra – widely regarded as the Canaries’ leading resident jazz band at present – kicked off the tour in El Hierro on Saturday before travelling to Tenerife for three performances yesterday, including a special family concert designed to kindle interest among younger audiences in jazz.
The band is led by composer/trumpet player Natanael Ramos Natanael Ramos, who is not only an accomplished musician in his own right but has also earned widespread praise for his work to cultivate and help produce new talent in the Canaries through his Jazz Influencers project.
The Canaries-wide tour, called ‘In a Duke Ellington Mood’, continues on Thursday 29 May in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria’s Teatro Guiniguada before the band finalises the concert series in La Gomera, following up its appearance at the Hotel Bancal in San Sebastián on Saturday 31 May at 8pm with a second family performance the next day (1 June) at 12.00 in the same venue.
The Atlantic Jazz Lab Orchestra’s playlist for the tour features some of jazz maestro Duke Ellington’s best-known compositions, together with others that have played a key part in the history of jazz, including Bugle Call Rag, Portrait of Louis Armstrong, The Star-Crossed Lovers, Harlem Air Shaft, and Sophisticated Lady among others.
Tickets for the remaining concerts this week can be purchased directly on the atlanticjazzlab.org website.
