La Gomera took advantage of Sweden’s recent National Day celebrations to showcase the island’s appeal for tourists from the country.
The Tourist Board set up a stand near the centrepiece of the Day’s events at the17th century Venngarn Castle outside Stockholm to display La Gomera’s many attractions for holidaymakers seeking peace and quiet in stunning natural surroundings.
Tourism councillor María Isabel Méndez said the decision to attend the National Day was a strategic one and aligned with the island’s ongoing drive to attract high-end and environmentally sensitive tourists from northern Europe.
“La Gomera offers a comprehensive network of hiking trails as well as other possibilities such as whale watching and even wellbeing activities such as yoga retreats, not to mention a rich cultural heritage, including its famous whistled language (silbo gomero), and traditional local food”, she explained.
Hundreds of Swedes from the greater Stockholm area visited the stand, which offered films outlining the range of attractions of a holiday on La Gomera. Visitors also enjoyed real time views of the island’s beauty spots thanks to live footage streamed from several webcams.
According to Méndez, June was chosen for the promotion campaign as it is often the time when Swedes begin to plan holidays to escape from the cold and dark Scandinavian winter and La Gomera is a prime candidate for bookings due to its warm weather at that time of year.
The Sweden promotion came just a few days after La Gomera hosted a group of travel agents from Estonia and Finland, who toured the island and key holiday locations such as Valle Gran Rey and had the opportunity to visit the main hotels, including the Jardín Tecina, Hotel Gran Rey and Jardín del Conde.
