An event taking place in Gran Canaria this weekend is hoping to break some of the taboos associated with some key women’s health issues.

Under the title “It’s not me, it’s my hormones”, the event on Saturday (21 June) in the Elder Museum of Science and Technology in Las Palmas brings together experts in holistic approaches to women’s health from teenage years onwards, to deliver talks on topics including menstruation, fertility, pregnancy, motherhood and sexuality.

The event will focus specifically on the menopause, a stage of a woman’s life which – according to organiser Elena Vicente from the island’s Maternity and Children’s Hospital – is still shrouded in taboo, even if many of the effects can be mitigated by today’s techniques and drugs. “The menopause is a fact of life and does not go away just because we try and hide it: it needs to be talked about” insisted Dr Vicente.

“There is still a lot that we can do about the menopause” she went on, highlighting the positive role of factors such as exercise, eating properly, treatments and therapies, all of which can help mitigate the negatives of the menopause.

In addition to the educational talks on offer, approximately 60 different activities will be available on the day, including concerts and workshops.

Museum director José Gilberto Moreno said that over 200 people had already registered to attend the event which is being billed as the first of its kind in Spain and is supported by Las Palmas Town Hall, the Cajasiete bank and the Martín Chirino Foundation.
