Spain’s leading travel magazine has chosen the two prettiest towns in the Canaries in its 2025 list of must-sees in Spain.

Viajar, which has held its market-heading position for several decades and is a proud champion of tourism with a difference, visits virtually every corner of the country to identify top locations.

Each of Spain’s 52 provinces is scoured for attributes that make their towns, cities and other spots attractive to tourists. This year’s list has thrown up some surprises in the case of the Canary Islands. In the case of the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (which takes in the islands of Tenerife, La Palma, El Hierro and la Gomera), most were banking on La Orotava heading the table again, but Viajar’s travel experts have instead singled out tiny Taganana in the Anaga Hills at the top of the island.

According to Viajar, Taganana is “one of the true gems to be discovered in the province, a hidden treasure concealed between the sea and the mountains”. The magazine adds that the picturesque town is surrounded by impressive nature and offers stunning views of the Atlantic. It advises visitors to take time out to stroll through its narrow streets full of traditional architecture, visit the 16th century church and take a dip in the Benijo and Almáciga, two of the area’s loveliest beaches.

Another town beginning with T tops the list of locations in the Canaries’ other province, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which comprises Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.

Teror is singled out for its wonderfully-carved wooden balconies, cobbled streets and sensation of ‘time stood still’, with its basilica a place of pilgrimage and the spiritual heart of Gran Canaria. Also highlighted as attractions are its Sunday market and the annual festivities in honour of the Virgen del Pino in September.
