Football may be in the doldrums in Tenerife at present but other sports continue to bring major successes for the island.

Following basketball side La Laguna Tenerife’s impressive season both in the ACB league (third place) and European competition (semifinals of the BCL), another Tenerife club has chalked up a stunning campaign.

The Tenerife Marlins from Puerto de la Cruz have been crowned champions of the Spanish Baseball League with two games to go after handing out a drubbing to rivals Santa Boi last weekend. The thrashing by 13-3 and 14-3 in the double header staged in the Néstor Pérez Suárez stadium not only saw off the Catalans but remedied the blip last year when the Marlins lost out on the title narrowly.

The win this year brings to fifteen the number of national championships won by the north Tenerife outfit, which also lifted the Baseball European Cup for the second successive season a few weeks ago and has its sights set on a historic treble if it manages to win the Spanish Cup.

Delighted manager Richard Montiel says that, although the league has already been won, the final two games of the season will serve as excellent preparation for the Cup competition, which takes place next month and is the slight blemish on the Marlins’ unprecedented track record as they have won it just five times, the last being back in 2013.

First, however, he wants his players to enjoy the moment and bask in the glory of a title success that further cements the Marlins status as the top team in the country.
