The death of a Los Realejos man at the weekend has led to renewed calls for extra caution when walking in picturesque but hazardous spots on the Tenerife coast.

The 28-year-old fell to his death from a height of 50 metres down a steep rockface above the Playa de Los Roques beach in the northern town.

Police, fire brigade and an ambulance attended the incident after an alert was received via the 112 emergency number but could do nothing to save the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of the massive injuries sustained.

It is believed the man was using a trail which had been explicitly closed off by the island’s Cabildo, with Stay Out notices placed due to the risk of rockfalls.

Locals say the signage and fencing erected to prevent access to the beach along the path has had to be replaced on several occasions due to vandalism.

The incident occurred just two days after a similar fatality outside Santa Cruz, which saw another man die after falling down a steep hillside on the road linking the Las Teresitas beach and the small town of Igueste de San Andrés.
