The disappearance of thousands of official CD Tenerife team shirts has taken a new twist following the arrest of a club employee.
The club contacted police several months ago after discovering that jerseys purchased for its various teams and for sale as official merchandising went missing systematically and were being put up for sale through unofficial outlets at discount prices.
Subsequent enquiries fuelled suspicions that inside help was instrumental in diverting the merchandise and the activities of a number of employees came under the microscope.
The investigation led a specialist team from Tenerife’s Civil Guard to premises in La Laguna which were raided this week, leading to the discovery of boxes containing almost 3500 items of sportswear stolen from shipments received from CD Tenerife’s supplier. The jerseys and other clothing have an estimated street value of 120,000 euros.
Two people, one of whom is an unnamed club employee, have been arrested in connection with the actual thefts and a third is under formal investigation for receiving stolen goods.
