Canarian baseball side the Tenerife Marlins have written themselves into the history books by making a clean sweep of the competitions they entered this year.
Crowned champions of the Spanish Baseball League with two games to go after handing out a drubbing to main rivals Santa Boi in late June, the Puerto de la Cruz have followed the title success up with a convincing Cup final win at the weekend.
The Marlins handed out a 13-3 thrashing to the Valencia Astros in one of the most one-sided finals in recent memory to complete the season undefeated.
The championship win brought to fifteen the number of league titles won by the north Tenerife club, while the Cup success ended a barren period of twelve years in the knock-out competition, making up for last season’s loss in the final.
The Cup win rounds off an unprecedented year which has also seen the Marlins lift the Baseball European Cup to record a historic treble that further cements their status as the top team in the country.
Manager Richard Montiel was euphoric after the Valencia Astros game and praised his players for going the full season without defeat in all three competitions, a feat he doubts will be repeated by other teams.
The history-making baseball success comes in stark contrast to the fortunes of CD Tenerife, whose disastrous season ended in relegation to the third tier of Spanish football.
