A man from Finland is enlisting support to track down two ‘guardian angels’ who saved him from drowning on Fuerteventura in mid-June.
The 54-year-old is anxious to locate two young men who were surfing on the Playa de la Esclaera near El Cotillo when they spotted his in difficulty and rushed to his aid on 15 June.
They pulled him from the water, providing resuscitation on the shore, and if it were not for their quick thinking he says he would not be alive today.
The Finn was not just any tourist, however: he was in Fuerteventura doing triathlon training around 2pm on the fateful Sunday and had entered the water for the swimming leg of the endurance test, having completed the cycling part.
However, an unexpectedly strong current dragged him under water and away from the shore. The situation was detected by the two surfers, the only other people in the water at the time, and they managed to get to him to pull him to safety.
Through a Spanish friend who has posted his request and details of the incident on social media, the grateful Finn says all he knows is that one of the two was local, from Puerto del Rosario, and the other was a friend who was visiting him from Madrid for a few days surfing.
“In the aftermath of the incident, he didn’t get time to thank them as they deserved and even though several weeks have passed, he still wants to find them to tell them how grateful he is for saving him”, said his friend, Jessica Barragán from Corralejo, who is giving the Finnish man’s quest publicity in local media, among them the island’s Radio Sintonía radio station.
