A change in wind direction has brought some respite today from the hot weather experienced in many parts of the Canaries in recent days.
Spain’s Met Office (AEMET) says that islands that have suffered temperatures in the mid-30s in the early part of the week can now expect cooler conditions and extensive cloud cover, particularly northern parts of Tenerife and La Palma, as well as western areas of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
Yesterday saw the thermometers top 35ºC in south Gran Canaria (Agüimes recorded the highest temperature at 35.7ºC), as well as in El Paso in La Palma, and southern parts of El Hierro.
Meanwhile Tenerife’s two biggest cities, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna, reached 31ºC.
However, the highest parts of the island saw a welcome fall in temperatures, including the area affected by the first major fire of the summer – El Tanque and Santiago del Teide – where the 24ºC recorded yesterday made life much easier for firefighters as they continued to put out the remaining flames and dowse the smouldering embers.
