Speculation is growing that Scottish footballer Oli McBurnie may be wearing a UD Las Palmas jersey next year despite departing the club at the end of the season.
The forward, who joined Las Palmas in summer 2024, is said to have triggered a release clause in his three-year contract to allow him to leave if the Canarian side were relegated, as happened after a disastrous season.
The UK media have reported this week that the Scot – now a free agent – is being considered by various clubs in the Championship, including Hull and Swansea.
However, two papers in the Canaries now report that, having failed to attract interest from a Premiership club, McBurnie is willing to contemplate a return to Gran Canaria even if it means second-tier football the coming season.
It is no secret that the Scotland international and former Sheffield United striker loves the island, where he has become something of a cult figure among diehard fans, and reportedly admitted a few months ago that he would consider a drop in salary to stay on at Las Palmas.
Days after ex-Liverpool defender Trent Alexander Arnold made the sporting headlines by speaking Spanish at a press conference announcing his signing for Real Madrid, McBurnie famously posted a video clip of himself speaking in fluent Spanish to journalists after he scored the winner for Las Palmas against Getafe in April, adding the question: “Who did better, Trent or Me?”
However, even if many would welcome his return due to his unquestionable efforts and work rate on the pitch, not all Las Palmas fans see McBurnie as the answer if a speedy return to the top flight is the priority.
He netted only three times in 34 league appearances last season and some fans have called for a proven striker in Spanish football to be signed instead.
